Biodiversity in Pennsylvania: Snapshot 2002 is a summary of a year-long effort by PBP to identify and consolidate information on the current state of Pennsylvania's biodiversity. This publication summarizes the status of Pennsylvania's biodiversity in 2002, including wildlife and habitats, threats, laws, policies, funding, and educational resources relevant to biodiversity. It was designed to provide a baseline for future comparisons of how well we fulfill our roles as stewards of Pennsylvania's extraordinary natural wealth. Biodiversity in Pennsylvania represents the first phase of the development of a statewide plan for biodiversity conservation in Pennsylvania, a multi-year process under the leadership of PBP.

Although Biodiversity in Pennsylvania was published in 2002, it continues to be the most up-to-date and current assessment of biodiversity in the Commonwealth. While some specific numbers in this report may have changed (e.g., the number of acres under agricultural easements or enrolled in Farm Bill programs), most of the information is still accurate and relevant to today’s conservation issues and needs. Key findings of Biodiversity in Pennsylvania include:

We share Pennsylvania with about 25,000 other known species.
At least 150 species have been lost from Pennsylvania and another 800 are rare, threatened, or endangered.
No complete inventory of Pennsylvania's plants and animals exists.
Information about Pennsylvania’s biodiversity is scattered across many organizations.
Threats to biodiversity can be grouped into two categories: habitat loss/fragmentation and pollution.
Sources of threats include changing land use patterns, deer, and invasive species.
Some species and habitats have been successfully restored, but such efforts are usually costly.
Many best management practices already in use are applicable to biodiversity conservation.
Pennsylvanians consistently place a high value on protecting plants, animals, and their habitats.
Although the public’s perceived knowledge about biodiversity is not high, most have an understanding of specific issues.
More than 90 organizations reported some involvement in biodiversity education programs.
Educational materials targeted at adults in general are lacking.

Biodiversity in Pennsylvania: Snapshot 2002 reveals that despite extensive knowledge about natural resource conservation in Pennsylvania and many activities focused on conserving wildlife and habitats, there is much we don’t know about biodiversity in the state. Many gaps need to be filled. In the face of this imperfect knowledge, one point is clear - sustainable use of our natural resources is critical for maintaining Pennsylvania’s economic health, as well as the quality of life of all Pennsylvanians.

Biodiversity in Pennsylvania was made possible through generous funding from:
The Heinz Endowments
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR)
      Community Conservation Partnerships Program
      Wild Resource Conservation Fund
U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service Wildlife Restoration & Conservation Program
Administered through the Pennsylvania Game Commission and
    Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
